Scheduling a deadline for a task (to-do item deadlines)

Task Deadlines (/deadline) offer a way to specify if there is a specific date/time that it needs to be completed by.

In some ways, setting a task deadline is similar to setting a "due date" or "start time" for a task. As with setting a Start Time, a Deadline task will be shown atop your list of tasks on the date it's scheduled, by virtue of it receiving a significant increase in its Task Score on the date of the deadline.

Also similar to setting a Start Time, a task with a deadline will be highlighted on your calendar if its deadline has arrived without the task being completed:

Think of a task deadline as "the drop-dead time by which this task really needs to be completed." Whether you can follow through on your past intent to complete the task, setting a deadline will ensure that you are cognizant when a deadline is upcoming (or past).

Thus far, we have described the similarities between conventional task scheduling (as set by /start or /due) and deadlines. Let's now focus on how the concepts differ:

When a task is recurring, its deadline remains fixed. Amplenote offers options to schedule a task such that it recurs at a fixed or flexible interval. Whereas each instance of a recurring task will have a distinct time at which it begins, the entire set of tasks will share the deadline you set. For example, if you are creating a Youtube video, you might schedule a recurring task to spend 3 hours every other morning on writing and producing the video. The "deadline" field in this case would be used to designate the date on which you promised the client (or yourself) that the entire process of creating the video would be complete.

A deadline continues to receive elevated priority (via Task Score) after its scheduled time. Whereas a task with a Start Time will receive a lump sum of Task Score on the date it is due, if it isn't completed, it returns to its original Task Score on subsequent days. Compare this to a task with a "Deadline" specified, where its Task Score will remain elevated (visually coded as "red") every day until it is completed, dismissed, or has its deadline pushed forward to a future date.

Tasks with a deadline can be separately filtered. When clicking to "Filter tasks" in the Tasks Pane, you can choose to separately filter tasks that are at or past their deadline. It is also possible to group tasks in Tasks Pane by the date of their deadline.

The most common way to set a deadline is to invoke its slash menu command, /deadline. This will let you specify when the task needs to be completed by:

Another option is to click on the "Start At" icon that shows when hovering a task (or having cursor inside task). From there, you can choose the option to "Add Deadline":

Once a deadline has been specified for a task, the deadline can be adjusted via the slash menu, or by opening the task details:
