[Original title: "Local mode for data ownership" updated by moderator for insufficient specificity of notes being written vs read. Not plausible to completely implement both in a single task, as each side is a difficult undertaking]
Give the possibility for users to own their data (notes) locally forever and the possibility to sync them with their favorite storage location (Dropbox, Drive...).

YES. I would vote for this if I could
Yeah, this is one of the two things Amplenote is rly missing imo to make it complete
Yes!
Would like my onedrive as the repository.
This is a very important criterion for those looking for a new note-taking tool. For example many of my students refuse amplenote for this reason and prefer obsidian or anytype only for this reason.
oh, i thought this was going to be an option with the desktop app. Hm thats kind of keeping me from wanting to invest into one of the subscription plans.
Think I would prefer an improved vault that can be applied to a tag or something honestly, but local mode could be a fine compromise.
Even just a manual backup would be great!
We're aiming to allow automated directory backups as a feature during Q1 2025, which covers half of the original spirit ("Local mode for data ownership") of this voting item.
The other half of "local data" is reading markdown files into the app. Not impossible, not easy. A plugin author could plausibly take a first pass at it. But we will interpret future votes on this voting item as people who hope to be able to auto-import markdown files from a directory.
It's still somewhat unclear whether a user who wanted to edit note files locally would want them available on other devices. The permutations of functionality can get numerous fast if we conditionally allow notes to exist on a single device, so I would be inclined to treat directory notes "as content to be added to the account for everyone device/sharer to access." Unless the user takes an action to designate a particular note should not be synced, like they do to designate a Vault Note or an archived note.
