Amplenote offers account-wide and note-specific options to control how note content appears within its note.
linkDifference between "Standard" and "Full" width
A note using "Standard" width is constrained to use at most 700 pixels of space. Compare:
The advantage of "Full Width" is that you can take advantage of the full resolution of your screen, to cram a huge amount of information on a single line. Especially if your note contains tables, it is often preferable to go "Full Width."
The advantage of "Standard Width" is that repeated studies have found that the human eye can parse text fastest when the width of the text content isn't too wide. The wider the note's text, the more difficult it becomes for the eye to find where the next line begins.
Most apps that are highly regarded for their design, like Craft, Notion, and Bear, offer only Standard Width notes. Their calculation seems to be that people want their notes to look "beautiful" and "readable," and these are counts on which Standard Width comes out ahead. The other key benefit of Standard Width is that it offers lots of empty space to choose a background image & background color that set an appropriate "mood" for the note.
For these reasons, Amplenote accounts created on and after October 2024 use "Standard Width" as the default Appearance setting.
linkSetting Account-wide preference for note width
Visit Account Settings => Appearance to toggle the default setting used to prescribe how your notes will be rendered:
Choosing the "Standard width" means that, when using Amplenote on display with 1,000+ pixels of width, the content of the note itself will be bound to 700 pixels.
linkSetting note-specific width
Whichever note width you picked as your account-wide default, you can toggle a custom width within an individual note.
To do this, open the note you want to convert, click the "Triple dot" note options in the upper right, then pick "More options" => "Edit page style." At the bottom of the "Appearance Settings" that are opened, you can pick an option for the current note that is separate from the account-wide setting.
